Surfing Samurai Robots Inc. is a company that builds tools and systems in the new field of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Our focus is on intelligent systems that we refer to as “SAFAI”.
SAFAI stands for “Safe and Friendly Artificial Intelligence”, and it represents a radical departure from conventional AI. SAFAI systems are designed to be stable in a way that previous AI systems could never hope to achieve. This leads to the possibility of guaranteeing the safety and friendliness of a SAFAI beyond all reasonable doubt, with a degree of assurance that far exceeds anything possible with ordinary technology.
SAFAI is also about solving the “complex systems problem” that has been undermining progress in AI for many decades. Conventional AI has always made the assumption that intelligent systems can be built without taking into account the fact that they might be complex systems. This assumption looks as though it is incorrect, and that would mean that it is impossible to construct a full, human-level artificial intelligence without discarding the methodology of conventional AI. Only a radical rethinking of how we do AI research would allow real progress to be made. SAFAI is precisely the radical new AI methodology that is needed to solve the complex systems problem.
At the present time the mission of Surfing Samurai Robots is to build the particular types of software tools that are needed to support research in SAFAI.
This website is an attempt to look at the many questions that come up when the idea of Artificial Intelligence is discussed. In particular, we examine what SAFAI is, whether it really is possible to build a SAFAI, and what kind of world might be created if a SAFAI could be built.
